I’m thinking about trying to go vegan for the new year. Not a forever thing, just try it for a month or so and see what happens.

Is this completely nuts? Are any of you out there vegan?

Here are my anticipated downsides:

  • I really love cheese and butter
  • Vegans sometimes come across as pretentious hipster douchebags
  • Eating out would be difficult

Here are some reasons:

  • I’m basically a vegetarian at this point anyway, with the exception of chicken once in awhile
  • I’m just curious to see how I’d feel if I only ate healthy things and no animal products
  • I like to cook and am always wanting to learn more, and this would force me to prepare more meals at home

Sooooooo opinions? Anyone else tried it?

I happen to really like steak. Like in an obsessive way, so I could never do it. But if you already only eat chicken every once in a while I don’t see why you couldn’t try it for a while. I own the Vegan Cupcakes cookbook, and since I know you are like me and love to bake I’d be pointing this out to someone to buy you for Christmas.

Here are some great Vegan Blogs to check out: Post Punk Kitchen, Dabbles with Apples, and The Urban Vegan.

I’m an Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian (with the occasional sushi), and from what I can tell, all ranges of Vegan and Vegetarian eating are getting easier - even when I request veggie dishes in restaurants, most servers ask if I eat dairy, which means there’s a non-dairy option on tap.  Veganomicon, by the Post Punk Kitchen ladies, is an excellent all-purpose cookbook.
